Prompt: Your character goes to a psychic, who tells them something frightening that changes how they see their future
Amy was always a fun-loving girl. She grew up without a care in the world. She seemed to wake up with the sun, soak in its rays, and beam them out to the world.
She loved adventure. She was the type of child who had her mother clutching her chest everyday as she climbed furniture, lept off the counters, and did handstands atop of railings and stairs.
In high school, she dared to venture out into the world. She went on countless mission trips and study abroad opportunities. At one point, her she found herself outside the country more than she was inside.
It was now Amy’s senior year of college. She had been studying education for the past three years. Spring break had finally rolled around and the much needed time off from student teaching was greatly received!
It had been her girlfriend Destiny’s idea to head to New Orleans. Amy decided this year it would be alright to forgo the typical service project and have some fun. It was the perfect getaway. The two of them could get into any troubles they fancied and there would not be any judgments.
So it seemed innocent enough when Destiny asked her to come in this building with her for a quick reading. It was an old structure, looked like it had been around since the early days of the Bayou. Inside, there were all kinds of candles, masks, dolls, oils, and crystals along with a host of books on black magic, real voodoo, numerology, and other taboo subjects.
Amy decided to browse the foyer while Destiny went to the back for her reading. She had urged her to come along and perhaps Madam could read her too, but Amy did not want to meddle (or know her future).
After what seemed like eternity, but in reality was only half an hour, Destiny and Madam returned. The duo was headed out the door when they heard:
“Wait! You must not go out, for something horrible awaits you.”
Stunned, the two looked at each other before turning their attention to Madam.
She nodded at Amy and continued “There is something evil that awaits you on the other side, so you must not go.”
“Do you mean, like right outside this door?”
“Maybe. Or when you return home. I can see into the future, I just can’t tell you the exact dates of any event.”
“Oh. Okay. Thanks.”
“I think we will take our chances today. Thank you again Madam!” Destiny told her as she grabbed Amy and went out the door.
Ever since that moment, those few words, Amy’s world came to a halt. She dropped her education degree and opted for general studies. Even though it was late in the game, she managed to complete a year’s worth of courses in two months, thanks to online classes. She then found a job as a marketing agent that allowed her to work from her apartment.
Over the next five years, she missed countless birthday celebrations, homecoming festivities, random hangouts, and even family gatherings. She had gained nearly fifty pounds as she refused to go past the threshold of her door. Online shopping and door services became her best friend as that was how she got all of her necessities and wants.
One day, as Amy was brushing her teeth, she paused when her gaze came up from the sink. She stared at herself in the mirror for a couple of minutes. As she pondered what she had become, she realized that this fear was not lifting her to her highest capabilities. She decided that living the rest of her life in this manor was not the ideal way for a once loving, compassionate, adventurous wanderlust to go about.
So she washed her face, took a shower, put on one of her newer outfits that had come in a week ago, styled her hair in the way she had seen on YouTube the previous night, and headed for the front door.
She turned the knob and inhaled deeply. Opening her eyes, she was amazed at the beauty of the outdoors. Amy slowly crossed her right foot over the threshold and then the left. She exhaled loudly as she realized she was still alive in one piece.
And on that day, Amy discovered that all was right with the world. There was no evil that awaited her on the other side of the door. She was perfectly fine.
So she continued to live out her life in the manor she had originally found herself, full of life, giving love, and experiencing everything to the fullest.
The only thing she had to worry about now was her new sleepwalking adventures that took her to unknown places and left her with unknown scars.
